Innovators

With the help of technology, fighting crime is improving day by day.

One innovator of forensics is The Bureau of Forensic Services. These forensic scientists gather evidence, analyze and compare it to other suspects or crime scenes. They offer criminalists, blood alcohol testing, and many other services to state and local law enforcement agencies. This organization provides forensic serology which helps determine the type and characteristics of blood. They also analyze saliva, semen, or any other body fluids. In addition to examining all these body fluids, they must be prepared to provide testimony in court.

Another field in which forensics helps is the criminalist, also known as the crime scene technician. These people collect any physical evidence from the crime scene and from people who are suspected of being involved in the crime. They usually help at the beginning by getting all the evidence analyzed. As these criminalists start to analyze the evidence they must determine the type of test to help remove the DNA. They must record every step to ensure that they reseal every piece of evidence and re-label it after examining it. These criminalists work at the FBI crime lab where they fingerprint, photograph, and analyze materials such as hairs and fibers.

Another innovator would be the Federal Bureau of Investigation (The FBI). They use a fingerprint system which is based on the Henry System. Fingerprints sometimes can be seen with the naked eye but they also can be invisible. Those visible are seen as an impression like a fingerprint in blood or paint. Those that are invisible can only be seen if they are dusted with black powder which can help expose the print. The dust sticks onto the fingerprint since fingers naturally have oil on them. Treating the prints with care is imperative since they are very fragile and can easily be destroyed if smudged or touched.

Finally, there is another crime lab run by the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (The ATF), where highly skilled people handle cases of arson, explosives, as well as tracing any gun evidence to decide who is its owner.
